Standards Explained

  • **THX (Immersive):** Recommends a closer viewing distance to fill $40^\circ$ of your horizontal field of view. This is best for movies and gaming, giving a theater-like feel. (Formula: Distance $\approx$ Screen Size $\times 0.84$).
  • **SMPTE (Standard):** Recommends a distance that fills $30^\circ$ of your horizontal field of view. This is a traditional, comfortable viewing distance. (Formula: Distance $\approx$ Screen Size $\times 1.2$).
  • **General Viewing (Safety):** A widely used, relaxed standard. A good rule of thumb is to place the TV 1.5 to 2 times the diagonal size away for comfortable viewing of high-definition content.
