What Is Glycemic Load, and How Is It Different From Glycemic Index?

Glycemic load (GL) is a number that estimates how much a specific portion of food will raise your blood glucose after eating it. It builds directly on the glycemic index (GI) — a 0-to-100 ranking of how fast a carbohydrate breaks down into glucose — but fixes the one thing GI gets wrong on its own: GI ignores portion size entirely.

That gap matters more than most people realize. Watermelon has a high glycemic index, around 76, which sounds alarming next to something like whole milk. But a typical serving of watermelon is mostly water, with only about 8 grams of available carbohydrate per 100 grams. Once you factor in that small carb amount, watermelon’s actual glycemic load per serving is low. Glycemic index alone would steer you away from a perfectly reasonable food choice; glycemic load tells the more accurate story.

Glycemic Load = (Glycemic Index × Available Carbohydrate in grams) ÷ 100

“Available carbohydrate” means total carbohydrate in the portion minus dietary fiber, since fiber isn’t broken down into glucose the same way. For example, a 150-gram portion of cooked brown rice has a glycemic index of roughly 68 and around 35 grams of available carbohydrate. Plugging that into the formula: (68 × 35) ÷ 100 = 23.8, giving a glycemic load of roughly 24 for that portion — solidly in the “high” category, even though brown rice is often described as a “healthier” grain choice than white rice.
